How Often Should You Detail Your Car in North Carolina?

One of the most common questions we get from customers across the Triangle is: "How often do I actually need to get my car detailed?" It's a fair question, and the answer depends on a few factors specific to North Carolina.
The Short Answer
For most people in the Triangle area, we recommend a full detail every 3-4 months and a maintenance wash in between. That works out to about 3-4 full details per year. But depending on your situation, you might need more or less.
Factors That Affect How Often You Should Detail
Where you park. If your car lives outside — no garage, no carport — it's exposed to everything NC throws at it: pollen, UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and rain. Outdoor parkers should detail more frequently, about every 2-3 months.
How much you drive. If you have a long commute on I-40 or 540, your car picks up more road grime, bug splatter, and brake dust. More highway miles means more frequent detailing.
Kids, pets, and passengers. If you have kids or pets riding regularly, the interior needs attention more often. Crumbs, dirt, pet hair, and spills add up fast. An interior detail every 2-3 months keeps things fresh.
Your car's color. Dark-colored cars show scratches, swirl marks, and water spots much more easily than lighter colors. If you drive a black, dark blue, or dark gray car, more frequent detailing will keep it looking sharp.
NC's Four Seasons of Car Damage
Spring (March-May): Pollen season. Pine pollen covers everything and is acidic enough to damage your clear coat if left sitting. A detail at the start of spring is essential.
Summer (June-August): Heat and humidity. UV rays fade paint and dry out leather interiors. Bug splatter from evening drives bakes onto paint quickly. Tree sap from parking under shade trees is especially stubborn.
Fall (September-November): Leaves and sap. Wet leaves sitting on your car can leave stains and promote mold growth in crevices. This is a great time for a detail before winter.
Winter (December-February): Rain and road grime. NC winters are mild but wet. Mud, road salt from occasional ice treatment, and general grime build up. A winter detail protects your undercarriage and paint.
A Simple Detailing Schedule for Triangle Drivers
Here's what we recommend for most of our customers in Chapel Hill, Durham, Cary, and Raleigh:
March: Full detail + sealant/wax before pollen hits
June: Full detail to remove pollen damage + summer UV protection
September: Full detail to clean summer damage + prep for fall
December: Full detail + winter protection
If you have ceramic coating, you can stretch this to every 4-6 months with maintenance washes in between.
